ART:DIS was proud to partner SGCares for Singapore’s Bicentennial celebration in 2019. Together, we launched a community mural that honoured our nation’s forefathers for laying the foundation for Singapore’s religious, healthcare, education, social service, housing and transport sectors. Unveiled systemically at four heartlands with group art-making activities, exhibitions and performances, these roadshows demonstrated Singaporean’s role in caring for communities.
The first panel of the mural was launched by Minister for Culture Community and Youth Ms Grace Fu at JCube on 2 March 2019. To engage the community, members of the public painted Chinese junks and batik-stamped their sails.
The second panel was exhibited on 11 May 2019 at Suntec City and gracing the event was Speaker of Parliament Mr Tan Chuan-Jin. Actors from local English drama KIN were also present to lead community activities such as painting Peranakan-style tiles and embossing clay bricks.
The third panel was unveiled at Chong Pang Amphitheatre on 13 July 2019 by Mr Desmond Lee, Minister for Social and Family Development. Beneficiaries from Sree Narayana Mission, as well as the citizens living in Yishun, joined in the activities by making paper cut-outs in the shape of Singapore’s national flower, the Vanda Miss Joaquim.
The fourth and final panel was revealed on 17 August 2019 in the presence Ms Foo, Mr Tan and Mr Lee at Our Tampines Hub. To celebrate the finale of this meaningful project, our Choir students sang beloved National Day song Home for audiences.
